Gulf Coast Getaway

So maybe its not the Florida Keys, but I think every Texan ought to have spent some time on Texas beaches as a child. I did and I treasure my memories. Galveston, Port Aransas, Padre Island, Corpus Christi...they're all laid back, fairly low key and great places to build sand castles, play in the surf, and probably spend a little time in the hotel pool, too.

We rented a condo recently in Port Aransas because I wanted Ford to have a little beach getaway before summer camp started up in Dallas. It was hot, I'm not going to lie, and traveling with a two-year-old and a newborn 4 hours (plus time for pit stops along the way) from Austin, where we spent the night with my family, was no easy feat. But I think the boy enjoyed himself and will look back at our family picture album and swear he remembers being there, laughing hysterically as the waves rushed over his feet, building sand castles just to crush them, and examining all sorts of marine life that washed up on the shore.

So if you ever find yourself in Port Aransas, try to ignore the seaweed and the cars on the beach and enjoy the sun and the sound of the surf because it can be fantastic. Just ask Ford. And definitely make time for a meal at Shells Seafood and Pasta. Its a small little joint (maybe 5 or 6 tables?) and if you don't arrive early you will have to wait, but the food is the best on the island.

Here are a few pictures of the vacation. You can see more on our Shutterfly share site: http://wefourbees.shutterfly.com/

Cool dudes.

Build it up and smash it down!

Ford enjoyed the tidal pools.

Emerson enjoyed the shade of our tent.

The day that a front loader and a dump truck arrived to
clean up might have been the best day of all.

Well, like I said, it might have been the best day.

  1. Yes, it's the beach atmosphere, plus the times of your life that make Port A a good memory. I was recently listed as one of the Great American Beach Towns.
